ISO 45001:2018 is the
international standard for occupational health and safety management system, help organizations control and minimize occupational health and
safety risks which
was formerly known as OHSAS 18001:2007. Currently OHSAS 18001:2007
Certification is being replaced by ISO 45001: 2018 and structured to integrate
with ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
standards.
The ISO 45001:2018 Standard sets
out effective requirements for enhancing workplace safety and intended for
reducing fatal accidental injuries, minor injuries at workplace and loss of
working days. This standard allows for potential improvements in various areas like
employee safety, hierarchy of controls, safe working conditions, managing legal
compliance, employee consultation and participation.
It has been developed in
response to the demand of industry for a recognizable health & safety
management system standard which can be externally assessed and certified. One
of its major strengths is its wide appeal for any organization irrespective of
size, sector, or geographical location.

ISO 45001:2018 (OHSMS) is applicable to any organization
regardless of its size, type and activities. It is applicable to the Occupational
Health & Safety risks under the organization's control, taking into account
factors such as the context in which the organization operates and the needs
and expectations of its workers and other interested parties. Also, any
organization must go for this certification if their core business activity may
affect or threat to health and safety of its interested parties (employees,
suppliers, customers, stakeholder etc.,).
The cycle of the certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of
certification, subject to the successful conduct of surveillance audits before
completion of the 1st & 2nd year respectively.
